“Although I have medical insurance through Medicare and Medicaid, I cannot afford dental insurance. Fortunately, I heard about CHS from several friends to help meet my dental needs.
Since my back teeth had been previously extracted, I needed to have my center teeth pulled which Dr. Jim Amstadt and CHS dental staff have accomplished. Eventually, I will have upper and lower dentures created.
Since I live at Charleston House, Angel, Dental Assistant at CHS coordinates with Carrie at Charleston House, all of the necessary medical procedures that need to be done before extraction of teeth. I have artificial joints, which require me to take antibiotics for all dental procedures. Also, I am currently on blood thinners and need to have my blood checked.
As you can see, there is quite a lengthy process involved. I am grateful for all of the help from everyone involved, especially Dr. Jim and Cindy at CHS.”

“I found myself in a lot of pain due to rotting teeth. The pain required me to take oxycodone for any kind of relief. Although the pain ceased since I was taking this medication, it certainly didn’t deal with the rotting teeth. I couldn’t find a dentist because I didn’t have any insurance since I could not afford dental insurance.
Then my mom told me about Church Health Services. Dr. Jim pulled the top teeth and I was fit with dentures. I kept the bottom teeth because there was not any pain at this point.
Dr. Jim and the entire CHS team was not only helpful and kind, but they provided the top dentures that I needed. CHS has given me a smile. At some point in the future, CHS will be providing a lower denture."

“I didn’t have any insurance so I was referred to CHS by UW Hospital staff in December, 2014. I had just had a leg amputation due to undiagnosed diabetes, CHS staff removed the staples for me. As I do not read, write or speak English, I needed a translator when I began coming to CHS. Since that time, Dr. Brad Allen, a volunteer doctor who speaks Spanish, and Cheryl Uttech, nurse practitioner and diabetic educator, have been working with me to manage my diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol, along with being overweight.
In January 2015, I was given a BDCH Community Care application to get physical therapy for when I would get my new prosthesis. In August 2015, I got my new prosthesis, but could not seek a new job until December, 2015. Since March, I have been working as a welder with only a little walking needed. The original prosthesis fit a little loose and I fell at work one day. The doctor at CHS worked with my doctors in Madison, and in May 2016, I received a better fitting prosthesis.
I immigrated from Mexico, where my parents are pastors. I have always been strong in my faith. My parents have visited the CHS clinic with me. Thank you, Church Health Services, for the help you have given me, and God bless everyone.”

I lost my teeth in 1992 when I was 19 years old. I was in an abusive relationship and several of my teeth were knocked out. I have been without teeth for more than half of my life. I cannot get dentures because my jaw bones have deteriorated to the point where there is no ridge for the denture plate to sit on. My upper palate had also been broken. My insurance company considered this to be cosmetic surgery and not a necessity so they would not cover it.
A year after my mini implants were done my jaw became infected. I was told that a bone graft would need to be done before any further implants could be attempted.
Since becoming a dental patient at CHS, Dr. Jim has gone out of his way to help me. At this time, I need to see Dr. Jim to have him remove a bone chip in my jaw. I am contemplating the pain involved with a bone grafting procedure needed before I can get the dental implants I need and will be discussing this with Dr. Jim as to who I would see to have this done. I am forever grateful to Dr. Jim and CHS for all of the help they have provided me with.
Whatever happens in life, just keeping going and search until you find your answer. If you find yourself in an abusive situation, just know that CHS is here to help!

Joe Santorelli who shared his dental story in our March-April newsletter shares the following; “Dr. Jim made an impression—even with five broken teeth—of my mouth. A complete upper plate was made pending the removal of my remaining upper teeth. With my new plate in place, I am thrilled to smile and show off my beautiful new teeth! Although the plate fit very well, Dr. Jim wants the fit perfect so some adjusting has been done. I am scheduled to return for a final check and to have a lower tooth rebuilt/patched and then my dental work will be complete.
Church Health Services is great! I feel like a new person and am forever grateful for all that they done for me.

“I started having problems with my teeth at a time my regular dentist stopped taking Medicaid patients. I called around to different dental offices, which I found I could not afford. I had broken teeth, cavities, and pain going into her ears.
A friend in Horicon recommended Church Health Services and I have been a dental patient for about 1½ years. Although I have seen three dentists at CHS, their combined goal was to preserve my existing teeth. Every time I came each of the dentists were very good to me, along with the hygienists and dental assistants. The receptionist has also done a great job of working me into their schedule when I have had an emergency.
I am grateful to CHS for their help and kindness shown me; without them, I would not have been able to get the dental help I needed.”
